Marshfield studies

Brant Rock Mood.jpgI was in Marshfield on Thursday and did a sketch of a spot known as Brant Rock near Green Harbor.  I didn't have enough time to paint on site so I wanted to capture enough information in my black and white sketch to paint it back in the studio which I did on Friday.  There are a few things I will change the next time I paint it, e.g. the horizon line is a little slanted and I don't like the way the rock line and horizon line merge.  This is known as a kiss and should be avoided.  One or the other shape should be lowered.  Since the sky was most interesting with the huge cumulus clouds I will lower the horizon line about two inches next time.  However I like the shapes; there is a definite focal point (upper right quadrant of tic-tac-toe) and there is a good sense of informal balance.  This particular armature is known as the Steelyard composition where a large weight on one side is balanced by a small weight on the other (think see-saw).

Tonal Sketch.jpgOverall, I captured the seacoast impression that I got when I first laid eyes on the scene.  I hope you guys are outside practicing your notan sketches.  Focus on placing your focal point shape, balance of black and white shapes.  Please feel free to email me if you have any questions, okay?

Cheers.
