Painting Four - Blast at Castle Island
Thursday, July 16, 2009
Well, I was right: It was lousy out today so I opted to go to the studio and paint a watercolor version of the pencil drawing I did at Castle Island yesterday. It is so much easier painting from a study like this. Ideally, I would prefer to do a quick value and comp study and paint on site. There is definitely an element missing when just painting from a sketch in the studio. In this case, since everything was so fresh in my mind I think I was able to capture the spirit of the scene. I wish that I exaggerated the bend of the trees more and the pine tree is a difficult species to paint from memory but I did the best I could. I learned a lot from the painting I did a week ago which helped with the shadows of the grass and road; one more benefit of painting similar themes and painting often is that you can reuse techniques and colors.
