Painting eight - Castle Island in Summer

Castle Island in Summer.jpgI took another stab at the Castle in my studio this morning.  I felt it was too humid to paint outside.  I decided to change the composition and pallette to make it more interesting.  This time I used only four colors- a primary pallette of permanent rose(red), lemon yellow and Pthalo blue.  I used Paynes gray to create shades of these colors where necessary.  Overall, I liked the cleanliness of this piece more than the last attempt.  Theoretically, it is possible to mix all the colors in the color wheel from this triad.  It takes a little more work to mix the right colors but slowing down is a good thing.  I will stick with this limited pallette for a while and see where it takes me. Hope you're enjoying the new blog format and that some of these paintings are motivating you to try your own hand at it.  Give it a shot.  The only thing you have to lose is a piece of paper.
