Painting Eleven - Pier Still Life
I have been battling the humidity the last couple of days but felt the need to get out and paint this morning. I am usually dissatisfied with my watercolor efforts in the field but I felt pretty good about this one. It still needs a makeover in the studio perhaps but I did capture the impression I was going for. The fish pier is an excellent place to paint; lots of subject matter everywhere with good shady vantage points and very few onlookers. The workers are much too busy to stop and look at a painter at work and there are few tourists going out that far. Once again my travelling bike studio paid off. This painting took one hour. I was hoping to get a more subdued stain-like effect but no matter how hard I try to avoid color I am drawn to it somehow. I am going out again this afternoon and I intend to use a limited pallette of just two colors: burnt sienna and french ultramarine. This should guarantee the old-world, staining appearance I so admire in the old English masters. We'll see.
