Painting Fifteen - Sailboats
This is more of a drawing or sketch if you will rather than a painting. I was trying to see what kind of impression I could capture at Castle Island this morning with some self-imposed limitations. First, I limited my pallette to a warm (raw sienna) and a cool (cobalt blue) and my permanent ink pen. Next, I wanted to simplify the scene greatly but still create the mood I felt. I was hoping to suggest a quiet, restful scene. Lastly, I completed the sketch from idea to execution in less than 30 minutes. I find myself going in a couple of directions right now with my art. I definitely want to exploit the medium of watercolor more for its inherent looseness and atmospheric moods you get with wet in wet or wet in damp washes. I am also concentrating more on using a variety of edges to lead the eye. Of course, as always, I am practicing drawing whether with a pencil, pen or brush. It all boils down to using a variety of shapes, tones, edges and colors. Color is the least important of those elements. Beautiful day today.
