Sketch of Pier Four
Well, my art has taken me in a different direction again. Lately, I have been struggling with doing full color paintings on site. It's a lot to juggle in terms of finding a subject, composing, value studies, color scheme and execution. It can be very frustrating if everything doesn't pan out. So, I decided to limit my travel kit to a rotring art pen with water-soluble ink and a water brush. This allows me to concentrate on my drawing, values and washes all in black, gray and white which are our three values I told you about. This gives me all the information I need in a one hour (or less) sketch to later produce a color version in watercolor or any other medium I choose.
Today's subject was one I spotted a few weeks ago while riding my bike. The bike has been a tremendous asset because it allows me to get to places too far to walk and unaccessible by car. It is a view of the backside of Anthony's Pier Four restaurant. I had a nice shady spot but had to stand because there are safety railings which blocked my seated view. Because it was a complicated subject with lots of planes and textures it took almost forty five minutes for the drawing alone. Once I got to laying in the different tones with the waterbrush it was joyful. A group of passersby stopped and one young lady said the sketch was beautiful which was my cue to stop. Some rainy day I will create a color version in watercolor. Have a great day.
