Sketch of The Bandstand
There is something about black and white that really appeals to me as an artist and viewer of art. I feel it when I look at black and white photos and again when I look at all types of black and white sketches whether done in pencil, charcoal or pen and ink. Maybe it is the unknown quality of the colors which involves the viewer directly in completing the image. Anyway, this was an informational sketch I did today at this famous Southie landmark. I got a late start this morning and was disappointed by the noon day light so I had to fudge the shadow direction and shapes a bit more than I like. It really is worth it to get out early morning or late afternoon for those dramatic shadows. The bandstand is a complicated building and could be overwhelming for beginners if you forget to break the silhouette into basic geometric shapes before tackling any details or tonal effects. I didn't feel the need to draw any brick shapes. I was satisfied with the scale and positioning of the piece in my sketchbook. Notice how I downplayed the trees so they would not compete with my center of interest.
