Charlotte's Summer Home

This is a watercolor card I did from a photo I took this weekend at South Dartmouth. Charlotte is the beautiful, precocious daughter of our friends Jerry and Darlene Jordan. This is her summer home. I did a pen and wash sketch on site but had to rush the process because of rain. When I got home I painted this as a thank you card. The drawing was much easier because I had done the plein air sketch. I am going to attach both the sketch and the painting. The watercolor technique I used was the classic layering method espoused by the English masters. After a careful drawing I washed in a tint of each local color. It is important that this first layer is made up of all equally pale tints. The second layer is a series of strokes developing the midtones. Finally, the shadow is laid in (when applicable) using the two most transparent colors: ultramarine blue and alizarin crimson.
