Two Winter Scenes

Hi everyone. Although I have not been blogging lately I have been plugging away in my studio and in lessons I have been taking in Wilmington and via books and dvds. I have been trying to absorb as much about technique, value, color, design as possible. I am placing two small watercolors on my blog this morning. Both are subjects I painted before in oil and was fortunate enough to sell. Because I am experimenting with new techniques, brushstrokes and colors I wanted to tackle subjects I was familiar with. Both were painted from photographs. I don't like painting from photos unless it is very cold out and the last few days qualified. Anyway, I started both paintings using ultramarine and burnt sienna for grays which gave me instant harmony and only reached for other colors if absolutely necessary. I highly recommend that you try some paintings with only these two colors. They mix well together and give a wide range of grays and can go quite dark also. I intend to try both of these compositions in a larger format someday when I am more comfortable with watercolor. I am getting there.
Congratulations to Julie Driscoll for joining the South Boston Art Association. Has anyone seen my work at the library? Please comment.
Regards, Bob
