B'way Station

Saturday, August 6, 2011

I haven't been sketching as much as I would like lately so I made a goal to go out for twenty minutes this morning with a sketchbook and four pens with black ink of various sizes.  I didn't have to go far.  Right across the street from where I live is Broadway Station.  The spot has everything I like and need to do a pen and ink sketch: geometric shapes of buildings, signage, cars, trees and people in all kinds of positions.  I found a comfortable place to sit, arranged my pens in a row according to thickness of line, took a good long hard look at the motif, imagined the scene on my blank piece of paper and dove in.  Pure joy for twenty minutes.  No phone calls, texts, problems, aches, other people's problems (the thing I hate the most); just a pen and paper and an urban scene waiting to be captured.  I truly believe that I have the best hobby in the world and I am so grateful to God to have the desire and ability to practice it.
