Denise's Garden Number 6
Sunday, October 23, 2011
I was hung over this morning after my niece's wedding yesterday so decided to sit in Denise's Garden for a while to collect my thoughts. I brought my sketchbook to do a few thumbnail sketches and value studies. I also took my camera (always a good idea). It was too cold to sit there for long but that forced me to concentrate more. It is not easy to compose garden scenes. It is easy to get confused by the bright and colorful flowers and the tendency is to clone one flower shape over and over. In this case I wanted to create three distinct value areas. The foreground was kept in the mid-tone range, the path, light and the background dark. I think this will make a nice oil painting. I need to get a good-size canvas this week. Maybe I can complete the painting in time for my show.
