G Street Hill
Saturday, August 27, 2011
My dog Bruno was at the groomer's this morning for 3 hours so I took the opportunity to go sketching. I began with a quick pen and ink rendering of G Street Hill. This scene was one I saw a lot as a lad growing up in Southie. I went to South Boston High School at the top of this street and hung out on the top in cooler months and the beach at the bottom in the summer with my friends. As with any hill scene, there are multiple horizon lines, one at the top looking at the gas tank and the other about halfway down representing the edge of the beach. I love the way you only have to suggest one car fairly accurately and then the viewer believes every other line down the street is also a car. Same with trees, poles and houses in this case. This was my first sketch in a while so I wasn't expecting much other than a warmup. I do like the pattern of shadows narrowing as they move away from the viewer. Beautiful summer day and my creative juices were now flowing.
