The Jolly Cricket

Saturday, March 26, 2011

I watched a documentary recently about Cezanne and was struck by the number of hours he spent copying originals in the Louvre and how years later Picasso spent hours copying Cezanne.  I must have had this in mind when I decided to copy a watercolor painting my sister Patty saw at, not the Louvre, or the Naples Art Museum, or one of the many high-priced galleries in Naples, but near the rest room in a funky restaurant on 5th Avenue called The Jolly Cricket.  I believe the artist who originally created this painting was a woman named Kay Fisher.  If that is incorrect I will edit this info later.  Anyway, I was downtown today for the art festival and since I had my camera with me I snapped a photo of the painting Patty saw.  I was so jazzed up about the colors, values and especially the many impressionistic dabs in the overhanging trees I raced home to copy it while I still had my energy.  I did it on card stock so I can send it to my sister. The-Jolly-Cricket.jpg
